A Letter From Our President
June 16, 2025
Dear members,
Your historical society needs your help again this year.
We have kept the doors open. Our county donation for 2025-2026 has been kept to $2500. We are open now on Saturdays from 11 to 3 for research. One of our most interesting encounters this year was assisting our local VFW branch in finding a deceased WW II veteran’s family so that they could get his medals and papers into family hands.
We just finished with our Saturday tours of the Old Jail in May. We have applied for another grant from the TN Historic Commission to continue restoration on the OLD Jail. We will not know the results of that until after the end of June.
We are continuing to look at other ways to raise funds but continue to ask for help from our best friends and lovers of history.
If every member could donate $ 40 this year we should be able to keep the building open and continue to preserve Claiborne county history and make up this year’s shortfall. If you can donate more we would appreciate it to be able to keep some funds in reserve.
We have a small operating budget of just under $10,000 annually but insurance alone on our building and the old jail has increased from $ 416.42 monthly in 2024 to $460.32 for 2025. This increase alone is 10%. We would like to be able to increase our savings and reserves so that we would be able to increase our historical events participation.
Next year we celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America and we would like to participate in local events and share our stories of the Claiborne County area before it was even Tennessee!
We have no debt and do not plan to go into debt.
We also will not sell our donors information. Unlike other organizations this is the only letter you will get from us this year. We will not bombard you with letter after letter.
We are a 501c (3) organization so your donations are 100% deductible on your tax returns.
If you are over the age of 70 ½ and would like to make a qualified charitable donation from your IRA account without having to pay taxes on that amount please call or email and talk to Carolyn as she can explain how you can arrange that.
For all of you that have all ready donated this year we thank you. Please be as generous as you can. If you would prefer to donate via credit or debit card please visit our website

Scroll to the bottom for memberships. If you click the two year $ 30 box and email us at claiborncohistoricalsociety@yahoo.com we won’t increase your subscription we will mark it as donation.
Please share with your friends and family.
Sincerely,

Plans are underway for the second phase of the
restoration of the OLD Jail! The re-pointing on the
bricks and mortar on the chimney, south side and the
front of the building has been done.
The north and back side of the building is the next to
be done in 2014.
This work is being funded in part with funds from the
Historical Preservation Fund under an agreement with
the National Park Service and the Tennessee Historical
Commission.
We are grateful for the grant but our fundraising
efforts have just begun. To continue to receive grants
we need to raise matching funds for continuing
restoration. Please send donations to:
or call our office: 423-526-5737 for more information.
